This is a powerful film about incarceration, teshuvah and Jewish obligation.
It tells the story of the legal battle to free Debbie Peagler from prison, two decades after her life sentence for involvement in the murder of the man who had abused her. Two young attorneys, Joshua Safran and Nadia Costa, with no background in criminal law, step forward to take her case, bringing long-lost witnesses, new testimonies from the men who committed the murder, and proof of perjured evidence. Safran, an Orthodox Jew, explicitly connects his observance with his sense of obligation toward Peagler.
The film will guide our conversation about yeshivah and we will study some text on restorative justice.
