It is a mitzvah to work with other service and faith based organizations in serving our community. Congregation Ohr Tzafon’s host day with ECHO is the first Wednesday of each month and we work in teams of 5 or 6 to provide fruit, salad, a main course, and dessert for north county families in need. For more information or to become a team member, please call 466-0329.
B'nei Mitzvah and General Projects
Recent general projects supported by Congregation Ohr Tzafon have been: Get on the Bus -- We joined with Atascadero United Church of Christ and provided travel gift bags for children visiting their incarcerated parents at California Men's Colony. http://www.getonthebus.us//index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1 Beanies for Baghdad -- We collected Beanie Babies, which are little stuffed animals. They were sent to soldiers in Iraq to be given to the local children, as bridge for communication and reconciliation. http://www.beaniesforbaghdad.com/
As part of our B'nei Mitzvah curriculum, our students are taught the Jewish value of tzedakah and tikkun olam - acts of kindness and justice in order to bring about healing in our world. The student is responsible for choosing a project, educating the congregation and raising money to support their cause. Recent projects chosen have been Heifer International and Dodgers Dream Foundation.
In addition, the COT temple youth group - COTTY - functions as a Mitzvah Corp with monthly social action projects. Upcoming projects include collecting and sorting the High Holy day food drive collection and visit to the SLO Food Bank Coalition warehouse, and participating in Habitat for Humanity building housing in Grover Beach and San Luis Obispo.
